Polarjazz 2023

Welcome to Longyearbyen and the 2023 edition of the Polarjazz festival. This music event has been held every year since 1998 and is highly popular both among locals and travellers from all around the world. During the course of four days you can see local, Norwegian and international jazz artists create wonderful musical experiences. The concerts are played in different locations in town, such as the church, culture house – even at one of the kindergartens!

In the beginning of February, daylight is slowly coming back after a long and dark polar night. This period of twilight is locally known as the "blue hour", as the sky has a special blue colour that reflects beautifully in the white snow landscape. It creates a truly magical setting for the music event.

Stay at Radisson Blu Polar Hotel

Radisson Blu Polar Hotel is located in the heart of Longyearbyen, yet close to the surrounding nature. The hotel reopened after a major renovation in February 2019, and is the perfect place to stay for both families, couples and friends. Relax in the lobby and lounge, in front of the fireplace, whilst enjoying a hot drink after a long day of adventure.

Enjoy a 3 course dinner

Included in this package offer is a 3 course dinner in the hotel's own Restaurant Nansen. Here, a lovely menu awaits, inspired by Nordic flavours. You will find Arctic fish, high-quality meat cuts, as well as vegetarian alternatives.

The Barentz Gastropub is also adjacent to the hotel, combining a good, relaxed atmosphere with light meals and a rich selection of both local and imported drinks.

Snowcat tour to an ice cave

A hidden, frozen world appears when you descend into the ice cave. This is something that must be experienced when on Svalbard. This package includes an ice cave tour with a snowcat. A snowcat is a comfortable vehicle for getting out into the Arctic wilderness. The trip goes up onto the Longyear glacier, located right behind Longyearbyen. It is not a long drive, but this beautiful tour gives you fantastic a view over town and the majestic mountain Hiorthfjellet on the other side of the fjord.

The entrance to the ice cave is difficult to find for anyone other than the guide, but in the middle of all the white there is a small opening. A staircase leads down to the magical world of ice and snow. You will get equipped with powerful headlights, and in a row you light up the narrow hallway in front of you. The ice cave changes from year to year, but usually one can walk a few hundred meters into the cave before the path stops (or it becomes too difficult to force). In several places, the corridor opens up like a large cathedral of snow and ice, which is incredibly fascinating.
