This tour starts at Gruve 7 (Mine 7) - the only mine in the Longyearbyen area which is still running. We start out at about 400m above sea level, where the views are fantastic from the first second. This tour takes you along the glacier, Foxfonnabreen, towards Foxdalen.
Foxfonna is a 5 km² glacier, named for the polar fox. The glacier is approximately 6 kilometres long, and runs from Foxtoppen (955m) and Gilsonryggen (949m) in the south, and runs northwards over the mountain Breinosa into Adventdalen, near Mine 7. A side arm of the glacier runs west into Bolterdalen, and both glaciers have pushed impressive amounts of rocks and ice into the moraines ahead of them.
The hike continues down towards the start of Foxdalen, where we will arrive at an old hunters cabin - a perfect place forman expedition lunch. After a tasty warm meal and hot drinks, we will continue on foot towards the beautiful Adventdalen and Camp Barentz, where the hike will come to an end.
This is a unique opportunity to see Adventdalen and the surrounding mountains from a bird’s eye perspective. An experience that you do not wish to miss!
This hike is around 11 km long, and is not suited for those who are not confident hikers. The terrain is uneven, and we will cross several streams. We recommend hiking boots, wind and waterproof clothing, extra clothes in a backpack, and a hat and mittens.
Safety is our highest priority, and the guide needs to be able to give directions you understand. To participate on one of our excursions, it is required that you speak and understand English or one of the Scandinavian languages.
