Isfjord Safari: Cultural & Historic Svalbard
Surrounded by magnificent landscapes, we visit places with cultural monuments from Norwegian and Soviet mining operations. On this 3-hour trip, you will see and learn a lot about Svalbard.
Your guide will pick you up at the hotel and drive you to our expedition centre. Here, you will be equipped with a flotation suit, life jacket, and goggles before we head down to the harbour. Then, we will drive out on the fjord, where the guide will decide the direction according to the weather conditions.
We will sail close to the bird cliffs of Diabasodden or Fuglefjellet, where the birdlife is extra vivid! With some luck, a whale or two may also appear by the boat; belugas especially thrive in Isfjorden and Adventfjorden during the summer months. If we have time, and if the weather conditions allow, we go ashore at Hiorthamn, just across the fjord from Longyearbyen. Here, there was coal mining activity between 1917 and 1921, and there is a lot of interesting history in the mountains and buildings.
After a nice break in the boat with something hot to drink, we will return to town, and you will be dropped off at your hotel.
