Isfjord Safari: A Taste of Svalbard
Surrounded by magnificent landscapes on all sides, we visit places with cultural monuments that may have history from both Norwegian and Soviet mining operations. On this 3-hour trip you will see and learn a lot about Svalbard.
Your guide will pick you up at the hotel and drive you to our expedition centre. Here you will get equipped with a flotation suit, life jacket and goggles, before we head down to the harbour. Then we drive out on the fjord, where the guide will decide the direction according to the weather conditions.
From May to the end of July, the fjord is bursting with birds that have migrated from all corners of the world. We will probably swing by the bird cliff at Diabasodden or Fuglefjellet, where the birdlife is extra vivid! With a bit of luck, a whale or two may also appear by the boat; Especially belugas thrive in Isfjorden and Adventfjorden during the summer months. If we have time, and if the weather conditions allow, we go ashore at Hiorthamn, just across the fjord from Longyearbyen. Here there was coal mining activity between 1917 and 1921, and there is a lot of interesting history in the mountains and buildings.
After a nice break in the boat with something hot to drink, we will make our way back to town and you will be dropped off at your hotel.
