Stay at Coal Miners' Cabins

The Coal Miners' Cabins is the place for you who want to get an authentic experience of the mining period on Svalbard. The relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, combined with the immediate proximity to nature, makes this a popular place for travelers of all ages.

The hotel is located in Nybyen, Longyearbyen's small "suburb", within walking distance from the city center. When Mine 2 was opened in the 1940s, several two-storey barracks were set up to accommodate the miners. These same barracks now makes up the Coal Miners’ Cabins – although with a slightly better standard!

The guest rooms are split over three separate buildings. Not all rooms have private bathrooms, but they are cozy and comfortable. Each building has a kitchen and common areas that invite you to make new friends from all over the world. The reception is located in the main building, where you also find the breakfast canteen and several lounge areas. Here you also find the restaurant Coal Miners' Bar & Grill, where you can redeem a voucher to get the dinner that is included in this package.

Ice cave tour with snowcat

A hidden, frozen world appears when you descend into an ice cave. This is something that must be experienced when on Svalbard! You will get picked up with a snowcat; a comfortable vehicle for getting out into the Arctic wilderness. The trip goes up onto the Longyear glacier, located right behind Longyearbyen. It is not a long drive, but this beautiful tour gives you fantastic a view over town and the majestic mountain Hiorthfjellet on the other side of the fjord.

The entrance to the ice cave is difficult to find for anyone other than the guide, but in the middle of all the white there is a small opening. A staircase leads down to the magical world of ice and snow. You will get equipped with powerful headlights, and in a row you light up the narrow hallway in front of you. The ice cave changes from year to year, but usually one can walk a few hundred meters into the cave before the path stops (or it becomes too difficult to force). In several places, the corridor opens up like a large cathedral of snow and ice, which is incredibly fascinating.

Wilderness evening

The wilderness evening at Camp Barentz is a very special experience which we are happy to include in this package. Located approximately 15 km outside Longyearbyen, you are completely surrounded by nature. Here, we often see Svalbard reindeer, and even Svalbard ptarmigan and polar foxes if you are lucky.

You get picked up outside the hotel and driven out to the camp. As you arrive at the cosy wooden cabins you’ll be met by your host for the evening. The host will also be on watch throughout the evening, in case a polar bear should appear.

You will get served good drinks and a delicious homemade reindeer bidos, followed by campfire coffee and dessert. After the tasty dinner, it is time to learn more about the King of the Arctic – the polar bear. Comfortably seated around the open fire in the cabin, you get facts and stories about our most famous residents. After the presentation there will be time to take some photos of the majestic surrounding landscapes, before returning to civilization again.
