Why September Is the Ideal Time to Visit Svalbard

September marks the transition from polar summer to autumn on Svalbard.

September on Svalbard marks the end of Polar Summer. The midnight sun has already dipped below the horizon for the first time since mid-May, the temperatures are slowly dropping, and soon the northern lights will begin dancing across the darkening sky again. The changing atmosphere makes this month perfect for experiencing the Arctic wilderness and local culture.

Arctic Wildlife Viewing

In September, Svalbard’s wildlife prepares for winter. Although the polar night is starting its descent, daylight still dominates the sky, providing excellent light conditions for wildlife viewing.

Joining a boat tour or photography tour gives you the chance to see animals in their natural habitat. Along the cliffs, birds are busy preparing for the long flight ahead. Out at sea, whales begin their southward migration in September, offering one of the last chances to spot them before spring.

On land, you can explore Svalbard’s roads by dog sled on wheels or e-bike, with good opportunities to encounter Svalbard reindeer and Arctic foxes along the way.

Golden Light

Visiting Svalbard in September allows you to experience the Arctic environment in Autumn’s golden light. There’s a good chance you'll see a spectacular dusk as the season changes, and September is one of the few times a year that you can experience sunrises and sunsets on Svalbard. Set sail on a sunset cruise for an unforgettable dining experience. The sky’s vivid colours provide a beautiful backdrop to a three-course meal. You never know – a whale may even pop up to say hello.

Mild Temperatures

September on Svalbard boasts mild temperatures for the region, with average highs of 4°C and lows of 0°C. This makes for comfortable conditions during wildlife expeditions and day tours.

As the month goes on, the temperature falls. Rain showers can transform into snow flurries, signalling the return of winter. As with all months on Svalbard, wearing water- and windproof outerwear is a must in September. Pack warm clothing you can layer to keep the chill off.

Cultural Events and Festivals

Visiting Svalbard in September means you can go to the world’s northernmost literary event: the Longyearbyen Literature Festival. A highlight on Svalbard’s cultural calendar, this event takes place annually at the beginning of September. Guests include local and national authors, and the itinerary spans events for adults and children.

Autumn Foliage

The changing landscape makes Svalbard one of the best places to go in autumn. Arctic flora and foliage transform as summer ends, colouring the tundra in red, orange and yellow tones.

Cycling across the Arctic roads on an electric bike trip is an unforgettable way to see the colourful tundra. Its shades pop against the sky during this time of year, providing stunning scenery.
