What to pack for your trip to Svalbard
You’ll hear a lot about wool here, and for good reason. Wool is a local favourite because it keeps you warm even when damp. Follow the Svalbard way: wear wool, stay warm. And if you forget something, don’t worry, you can find everything you need here on Svalbard, at tax-free prices!
While essentials like personal medication, underwear, and toiletries are a given (you know what you need), we recommend that you bring along:
Upper Body
A warm jacket: A big, fluffy down jacket is a must-have. Even in summer it can come in handy, for instance when you're outside on a boat, soaking up the views . For women, we recommend a longer style to keep your backside warm, you’ll thank us later.
Warm sweater or light down jacket: A woollen or fleece sweater, or a lightweight down jacket, is ideal as a mid-layer. You can easily adjust your warmth by removing or adding this layer.
Wind- and waterproof outerwear: A good-quality wind- and waterproof jacket and trousers (like Gore-Tex or similar) are essential. Svalbard’s winds can be relentless, and you’ll appreciate the protection. For added warmth, layer up with a woollen jumper or a lightweight down jacket underneath.
Buff or neck warmer: A fleece or wool buff is perfect for keeping your neck warm and can double as a face cover if it gets windy or chilly.
Warm hat or headband: Choose a woollen hat or headband to keep your head toasty. While synthetic ones may look stylish, wool offers far better warmth and insulation, especially on windy days.

Lower Body
Long underwear: Your base layer is crucial. Opt for woollen long underwear as it keeps you warm even if your skin gets damp from activity. Avoid cotton, as it loses its insulating properties when wet.
Thick woollen socks: Thick woollen socks are a game changer for keeping your feet warm and cosy. They’re perfect for layering and will ensure your toes stay toasty, even on the coldest days.
Warm shoes: Your footwear should be roomy enough for thick wool socks. Tight shoes restrict circulation and can make your feet cold, so aim for a bit of wiggle room for maximum comfort.
Indoor shoes: Many hotels and restaurants on Svalbard still follow the charming tradition of removing your outdoor shoes when entering. While slippers are often provided, a pair of comfy indoor shoes can make your stay feel even more homely and convenient.
Accessories
Windproof mittens or gloves: Windproof handwear is essential, and on colder days, mittens are the best option as they trap heat by keeping your fingers together.
Wool liners: Thin wool liners are excellent under your gloves or mittens, providing extra insulation. Pro tip: go for touchscreen-compatible liners to take photos on your phone without removing your liners!
Small backpack: A small backpack is handy for keeping your items secure while exploring. Use it to carry extra layers, snacks, or spare mittens – you never know when you’ll need them!
Binoculars: Perfect for spotting wildlife and taking in the breathtaking Arctic landscapes.
Camera: Svalbard is a photographer’s dream, with stunning scenery and unique light conditions. Bring your camera to capture the magical Arctic moments

Pack for the seasons!
Each season on Svalbard brings its own unique conditions, so in addition to the basics, make sure to pack a few essential items specific to the time of year you're visiting.

Sunny Winter (1 March - 16 May)
Sunglasses: The Arctic sun is dazzling, especially when it reflects off the snow. Polarised lenses are particularly effective for reducing glare and enhancing visibility.
Non-water-based sunscreen: Even in the cold, the sun can be intense, so remember to protect your skin. Use a non-water-based sunscreen to avoid freezing on your face in low temperatures. Opt for a high SPF to guard against sun and snow reflection.
Crampons/Spikes: Winter temperatures on Svalbard can fluctuate, creating icy and slippery conditions underfoot. A pair of spikes or crampons can be a lifesaver, giving you extra grip and stability when walking on frozen ground. They’re small, easy to pack, and great to have just in case!
Polar Summer (17 May - 30 September)
Sturdy hiking boots: When hiking in the mountains on Svalbard, a good pair of high-quality hiking boots with proper ankle support is essential. The terrain can be rugged and uneven, with rocky paths and loose ground, so sturdy footwear will help keep you steady and comfortable throughout your adventure.
Sunscreen: The Arctic sun is surprisingly strong in summer, especially with its 24-hour presence and reflection off the water and glaciers. Protect your skin with a high-SPF sunscreen to prevent sunburn, even on cloudy days. A water-resistant formula is a good choice, especially if you're out exploring on the water or working up a sweat on a hike.

Northern Lights Winter (1 October - 28 February)
A Headlamp: While the aurora, moon, and stars create a stunning natural glow during Northern Lights Winter, Svalbard is in the midst of the dark season – and it gets really dark. A reliable headlamp is essential to light your way and ensure you don’t miss a thing.
A reflective vest or clip-on: When walking around Longyearbyen during the dark months, wearing a reflector is a simple but important safety measure, ensuring you are visible to drivers.
