New environmental regulations on Svalbard
From 1 January 2025, new environmental rules came into effect on Svalbard. These changes aim to protect the Arctic's fragile ecosystem while still allowing visitors to enjoy everything this special destination has to offer.
What does this mean for you as a visitor?
These new rules are here to help safeguard the wildlife and landscape while ensuring your visit remains as exciting and enjoyable as ever.
Here’s how:
Polar bear encounters: The updated distance rule (300m, or 500m between March and June) aligns with how we already operate. Our guides ensure you can safely observe polar bears without disturbing them, keeping the experience just as awe-inspiring.
Camping: If you’re planning to camp, you’ll now need to apply for a permit in advance. We’re happy to guide you through the process so you can enjoy your trip while following the regulations.
Boating and wildlife: Speed limits and distance rules near walrus haul-outs and bird cliffs are designed to avoid disturbing wildlife. Our boat tours will still bring you close enough to enjoy these incredible sights responsibly.
Snowmobiles and drones: New limits on where and when snowmobiles or drones can be used are in place to protect sensitive areas. Our tours are designed to work within these guidelines, so you won’t miss a thing.
Let’s protect Svalbard together
Svalbard is an extraordinary place, and its wildlife and landscapes deserve care and respect. The new rules reflect values we’ve always followed, such as keeping a safe distance from polar bears and minimising any impact on nature. These changes ensure that both visitors and locals can continue to enjoy this Arctic environment without harming it.
Don’t worry, you’ll still have an amazing experience
The new regulations won’t take away from the adventure. Svalbard’s mountains, fjords, and wildlife are as breathtaking as ever. Whether you’re watching a polar bear from a safe distance, exploring glaciers, or learning about Arctic history, your trip will still be unforgettable, with just a little extra care for the environment.
