7 Hour Snowmobile Safari to Tempelfjorden
Your guide will pick you up at the hotel and drive you to our expedition centre. Here you get equipped with a scooter dress, boots, balaclava, helmet and mittens, before we go to the scooters that are waiting for us outside. The guide will show you how the scooter works and how to drive it – then it’s time to head out into the wilderness!
The goal for the tour is Sassenfjorden (the ‘Sassen Fjord’) and Villa Fredheim, the hunting base of the legendary trapper Hilmar Nøis. Nøis was known as the ‘King of Sassen’, and spent 38 winters on Svalbard. Many of the trapper cabins on Svalbard are of the simplest sort, but Nøis’ is an exception. It is called “Villa” Fredheim for a reason. With its flag pole, potted plants and curtains, this two storey house was a palace in comparison to the other cabins. Despite this luxurious standard, it is hard not to feel enormous respect for Nøis and his family who lived in these harsh conditions, winter after winter.
During the tour, we will enjoy an expedition lunch out in the wild. If the weather conditions and time allow, we might drive up to the top of Fjordnibba. This is a wonderful viewpoint, offering panoramic views over the fjord, the mighty mountain Tempelfjellet and the Von Post Glacier. Whichever route we take, the guide will share interesting details on the environment and history of the area, and if we are lucky we may see some local wildlife.
