A taste of the endless night
A journey through stories, flavours and the polar night
When the sun disappears below the horizon, Svalbard enters a season unlike anywhere else on Earth. The landscape falls quiet, the sky fills with stars, and everyday life takes on a slower rhythm.
This guided evening walk invites you to experience the polar night through the stories, places and flavours that have shaped life in Longyearbyen for generations.
The evening begins at Funken Lodge, where Champagne and king crab canapés are served as your guide shares stories of Svalbard's mining heritage and the people who built a community in the High Arctic. From there, you set out on foot through the stillness of the polar night. Along the way, you'll pass historic landmarks while hearing about life through months without daylight, the challenges of Arctic living and the traditions that continue to shape Svalbard today.
The journey continues at Huset, Longyearbyen's historic gathering place. Here, local stories are paired with Svalbard-inspired flavours, including locally brewed kombucha and a selection of Arctic-inspired cured meats. The final stop is Coal Miners' Cabins, where a crackling bonfire, hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows bring warmth to the evening. As the fire burns, the last stories are shared – of resilience, community and life at the edge of the Arctic.
A peaceful walk back through the winter darkness rounds off an evening that offers a deeper connection to Svalbard, its people and the landscapes that make this place unlike anywhere else.
