The cod has come to Svalbard! Over the last few years the Isfjord near Longyearbyen has been teeming with cod in the late summer and autumn, and a fishing tour is fun for all. You don’t need a hunter’s licence or special permissions, just a good dose of luck!

This tour takes place in our sturdy boats, and the guide will loan you all necessary equipment, including fishing rods and a floatation suit. The best fishing area is not far out on the Isfjord, near Fuglefjella and if it isn’t too late in the season, thousands of nesting birds may watch you eagerly from the cliffs over our fishing spot. It goes without saying that if you do hook a fish, you will be the most popular person in the area, and optimistic gulls, puffins and fulmars will flack around the boat hoping for a fish head or delicious fish guts for lunch!

It is not only the nesting birds that can enjoy the day's catch, if you wish you can enjoy the fish at Restaurant Nansen later in the evening. For an additional price of only 575,- NOK you get a special menu put together by the chefs, exclusively for you.

The menu starts with Arctic sashimi, glazed with sweet-soy ginger, sea buckthorn jelly, wasabi and hazelnut. Followed by cod ceviche with chili, coriander, lime and mango salsa. The main course is smoked BBQ cod fish with pickled artichoke, artichoke chips, caper butter and potato cream. The dessert is the todays choice, by the chef.

  • Transport to and from accommodation in Longyearbyen
  • Floatation dress to use during the tour
  • Hot drinks and biscuits

Safety is our highest priority, and the guide needs to be able to give directions you understand. To participate on one of our excursions, it is required that you speak and understand English or one of the Scandinavian languages.

How to dress on a boat tour with a Polarcirkel boat

Even though it is summer, it can be cold on Svalbard. Especially when you are on a boat trip in an open polar circle boat. We lend floatation suit, life jackets and goggles to all guests, but we recommend that you dress well underneath.

We recommend:
• Warm shoes
• A thick wool sweater or thin down jacket
• Wool underwear
• Mittens / gloves
• Neck / buff
• Beanie

If you do not have warm shoes, we have a limited selection of boots for loan.

You can experience both rain and sea spray, so we recommend packing camera equipment well, and preferably in a waterproof dry bag. Hurtigruten Svalbard is not responsible for any damage that may occur to your personal equipment.
