Stay at Coal Miners' Cabins

The Coal Miners' Cabins is the place for you who want to get an authentic experience of the mining period on Svalbard. The relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, combined with the immediate proximity to nature, makes this a popular place for travelers of all ages.

The hotel is located in Nybyen, Longyearbyen's small "suburb", within walking distance from the city center. When Mine 2 was opened in the 1940s, several two-storey barracks were set up to accommodate the miners. These same barracks now makes up the Coal Miners’ Cabins – although with a slightly better standard!

The guest rooms are split over three separate buildings. Not all rooms have private bathrooms, but they are cozy and comfortable. Each building has a kitchen and common areas that invite you to make new friends from all over the world. The reception is located in the main building, where you also find Coal Miners' Bar & Grill. Her you'll find a menu full of lovely dishes, and if you book this package, you get one dinner included in the price. How about a delicious cheese fondue after a long day outside?

Day Cruise on the Fjords

Experience Svalbard's beautiful coastal landscape on a trip aboard MS Bard. This is a ground-breaking catamaran for day cruising, specially built to leave the smallest possible footprint in the vulnerable Arctic nature.

The trip you will join has no fixed route or destination; We sail where the conditions are most favourable, based on weather conditions, waves, and recent observations of wildlife. In other words, the goal of the trip is to capture the best experiences the day has to offer.

Between June and August, the landscape is colored in contrasting shades of green and yellow. With a little luck, wildlife appears along the way. We might see reindeer, seals, whales and – with some extra luck – polar bears. We’ll pass cultural monuments and historical sites, and the guides will ensure an unforgettable experience for all senses. Read more about the tour here.

Additional activities

Are you tempted by more adventures? The selection of summer activities is extensive, and you can easily book them directly here on our website.

In the summer we can highly recommend a trip with our hybrid boat Kvitbjørn. Near glaciers, wildlife or settlements, it runs silently on electric propulsion. This allows both wildlife and passengers to relax and enjoy the quiet nature. At higher speeds, hybrid propulsion is used; Both the electric motor and the diesel engine are used at the same time. This allows us to get up to speed whilst reducing the diesel consumption.
