The Hurtigruten Svalbard ESG Report

Meaningful steps are being taken to promote sustainable tourism on Svalbard. We are committed to protecting this unique Arctic environment, supporting the local community, and setting an example for sustainable exploration. The ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Report highlights our efforts to preserve Svalbard’s fragile ecosystem and ensure tourism remains sustainable for future generations.

What’s in the ESG Report?

The report is packed with real actions and ambitious goals, from cutting carbon emissions to reducing waste and promoting local sustainability. It’s not just about bold ideas; it’s about the tangible ways we are making a difference right here on Svalbard.

Ingeborg Flønes | Hurtigruten Svalbard: CEO

“Being situated in the world’s northernmost town and so close to wildlife, we see the impact of climate change first-hand. Our powerful yet fragile home gives us a unique opportunity to inspire people and harness the power of nature.”

Highlights from 2023

Svalbard’s environment and community are truly unique. By being part of the ESG framework, we have the tools and support to ensure our efforts make a lasting positive impact:

Harnessing the midnight sun

In 2023, we installed 650 solar panels on the rooftops of Radisson Blu and Polarsenteret. Combined with our existing installations, they now produce nearly 8% of our energy needs—around 140,000 kWh of clean electricity!

Driving electric

Our logistics have gone greener with an electric Mercedes e-sprinter van charged with solar power. Plus, four electric minibuses now transport guests around Longyearbyen, powered by solar and wind energy.
