Chasing the Northern Lights: Auroras on Svalbard
Svalbard’s location high in the Arctic Circle makes it a unique place to see the northern lights. Discover the best ways to see the aurora on Svalbard.
Seeing the northern lights is one of the most magical experiences on Svalbard. However, it takes certain weather conditions in a specific season for this natural phenomenon to happen. Here’s everything you need to know to maximise your chances of witnessing the aurora.
What are the Northern Lights, and what causes them?
The northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, are caused by clouds of electrically charged particles from solar storms on the Sun travelling millions of miles and colliding with gases, including oxygen and nitrogen, in the Earth’s atmosphere. The resulting reaction creates the vibrant, colourful light we see in the night sky, with the characteristic wavy pattern being caused by the lines of force in the Earth’s magnetic field.
Ways to See the Northern Lights
Midway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, Svalbard is ideally located for witnessing the aurora. It’s one of the few inhabited places on Earth where the Polar Night occurs. From 14th November until 29th January, darkness takes over for 24 hours a day, making it possible for the northern lights to appear around the clock. In fact, it’s one of the few places in the world where you could see them in the middle of the day.
The aurora is a natural phenomenon, so its appearance can never be guaranteed – it depends on both weather conditions and solar activity. However, during the Polar Night, your chances improve when the skies are clear – especially on the coldest days, when the temperature drops and the northern lights often make an appearance.
Activities During Winter to See the Northern Lights
There are several activities available during the Northern Lights Winter, where the aurora may occur. From dog sledding with huskies to hunting the northern lights on snowmobiles, there are many unique adventures worth adding to your itinerary.

If there isn’t enough snow, you’ll go by a cart on wheels in Adventdalen instead. Less light pollution in these locations increases your chances of seeing the aurora when they appear.
