A polar night dog trip where the means of transport is dependent on snow conditions. You get to experience the wonderful Svalbard nature one way or the other!

Let's go dog tripping

In November and December the polar night descends over the island and make for some amazing northern light spotting opportunities. Some years the winter come early and we can go dogsledding from early on, other years we have to wait until Christmas for the snow cover to be good enough for a sledge. However, the dogs want to go out and run every day, and we’ve made an excellent polar night dog trip, where the means of transport depends on the weather and snow conditions.

The polar night from November until January is a spectacular time for northern lights spotting. It can appear any time of the day, and going out for a northern light hunt with polar dogs is an amazing experience. We pick you up at your hotel in town and take you to the dog kennel 10 kilometres out of town. Here we’ll get some warm gear on (suit, boots, hat, gloves and gaiter), and meet our new furry friends.

If there is enough snow we’ll head out with a sledge into the Bolter Valley. If we lack snow we’ll go with carts in the Advent Valley. Being far away from town there is less light pollution than in Longyearbyen, and the chances of seeing northern lights are bigger. And regardless of the Aurora Borealis, the polar dogs will be forever grateful for a run in the wild.

After some time on the sledge/cart we return to the kennel for a hot drink and a biscuit, and maybe we get to meet the newest litter of puppies.
