Are you ready for an Arctic adventure? This is the expedition for you, if you want to experience the wild nature of the Arctic, far away from people, traffic and mobile coverage, close to the elements. The tour takes you through the beautiful Krossfjord, filled with calving glaciers, impressive bird cliffs and teeming life in the sea, which combine to create the most unique wilderness experience. Our expedition starts and ends onboard the historical MS Nordstjernen, which takes us up to 80 degrees North, and then to and from the Kongsfjord for our kayak adventure!

The expedition start with an overnight in Longyearbyen, where you will meet your guide and make you last preparations. On day two, we embark MS Nordstjernen and sail towards Barentsburg. From there, we will spend a couple of days exploring the northwest corner of Spitsbergen with the ship, before arriving in the Krossfjord. Time to wave goodbye to civilisation and begin our Arctic paddling expedition.

We will spend the next week paddling around the fjord, setting up a new campsite every night. Each day will offer something new, as we explore the area by kayak and on foot, seeing everything from spectacular glacier faces to historical trappers cabins. We will have all our gear with us, and be completely self-sufficient, just like the old Polar heroes.

After a week in the untouched wilderness, it will be a bit of a shock to the system to board MS Nordstjernen again and return to Longyearbyen - but you will have the most amazing memories from your adventure in the Arctic wilderness.

Daily program

Day 1
The guide will meet you in the reception at the Coal Miners’ Cabins at 10:00am. A welcome meeting will be held where the participants and guide can get to know each other, the tent teams will be set up, and we will go over the plan and our expectations whilst studying the map. From here, the guide will take you down to the stores, where we will look through all of the equipment for the trip, check all the tents and primuses, check our supplies and select our dry suits. Should you wish to make any adjustments in regards to equipment, tent teams or food, this is the time! Once we are finished packing, you are welcome to join the guide for a hike to Varden, a viewpoint on Platåberget, offering excellent views of the Adventfjord and parts of the Isfjord. Accommodation at Coal Miners’ Cabins is included.

Day 2
Enjoy the buffet breakfast at Coal Miners’ Cabins between 7:00 - 8:30 am. Check out from the hotel at 8:30am, ready for pick up for your sightseeing trip at 9:00am. This tour ends with embarkation of MS Nordstjernen at 12:00. Lunch will be served on the way to Barentsburg, where a sightseeing tour and local Russian folklore show await. Be sure to be back on board by 6:30pm, when we will set a course for the North. Dinner will be served on board as we head towards the Liefdefjord.

Day 3
We arrive in Liefdefjorden, and make our way towards Monacobreen where the expedition team will plan a landing. Sail on to 80 degrees North, and look for walrus on the island, Moffen.

Day 4
Breakfast will be served on board before we disembark MS Nordstjernen near the glacier, Lilliehöökbreen. Now the adventure really begins! Remember to leave a set of clean clothes on board the ship - you will appreciate them after your first shower one week from now!

Day 5 - 10
We will paddle through the Lilliehöökfjord and cross over to Cadiopynten. We will then continue on to the Möllerfjord and up to the cabin, Lloyd’s Hotel. During the trip, we can paddle our way around all of the gorgeous bays on the east of the fjord. The landscape in this region is varied, and there are many lovely glacier faces. Following the east side, we will paddle from the Möllerfjord to the Krossfjord. How far we will travel on this tour will depend on the weather, wind, currents and the participants wishes. We plan to reach Fjortende Julibreen - the July 14 Glacier, and if the conditions are good, we will reach the sheltered bay behind Blomstrandhalvøya in the Kongsfjord.

Day 11
Our last day of paddling. In the afternoon, we will be collected by MS Nordstjernen. We will indulge in a hot shower, and enjoy a farewell dinner in the ship’s restaurant. After dinner, there will be a landing in Ny-Ålesund with a guided tour.

Day 12
Breakfast will be served on board MS Nordstjernen. As you remember the fantastic days in the wilderness, Longyearbyen will seem like a hectic big city, compared with the stark silence of the fjords.

The tour programme can be changed underway, should weather or conditions make it necessary. The tempo of the expedition will be adjusted to the conditions and the physical strength of the participants. The sailing plan for MS Nordstjernen can also be adjusted according to the weather and conditions. During the cruise portion of the tour, accommodation will be in small inside cabins with shared bathrooms.

To take part in this expedition, you must be in good physical shape, and have some previous knowledge of paddling. The ‘Svalbardian’ waters can be challenging at times, due to the wind and waves. If you have significant paddling experience, you can try our single kayaks, and for those with less experience, we also offer sturdy double kayaks. This tour is not suitable for those with back, neck, arm or wrist issues.

Our guides are experienced sea kayak paddlers, and will do their very best to ensure that you have a fantastic experience. On Svalbard, the weather is one of those things we can not change, and as the safety of the group will always be our focus, this can mean that the route may be changed without warning, or that some days may be changed to hiking instead of paddling.

As a participant, you must be prepared to be a polar bear guard during a couple of nights. We will set up a roster, with the goal of allowing everyone to sleep as much as possible. This is quite an exotic experience, and many participants have told us that wandering around the camp alone, with the midnight sun on your face, while the rest of the group sleeps is one of the most memorable parts of the tour, so even if it will mean a little less sleep, don’t be afraid to ask for an extra shift!

You will be sent an equipment list prior to arrival. Remember that Svalbard is tax and duty free, so that you can always pick up quality equipment in our expeditions shop, Longyear78.

Safety is our highest priority, and the guide needs to be able to give directions you understand. To participate on one of our excursions, it is required that you speak and understand English or one of the Scandinavian languages.

You will receive a full equipment list prior to the tour. Use waterproof bags to pack clothes and personal equipment. Using several small bags makes it easier to pack your kayak, and to know what is where.

Hurtigruten Svalbard will provide the following equipment:

  • Tent
  • Sleeping mat
  • Shared equipment for the camp (including kitchen equipment, pans and cutlery)
  • Food and drinks
  • Kayaks
  • Paddles
  • Spray skirts
  • Floatation vests
  • Dry suits
  • Kayak shoes
  • Paddling mittens
  • Waterproof bags for shared equipment
