Made for the future - join us today! During the summer of 2020, Hurtigruten Svalbard and Brim Explorer launches a hybrid-driven speedboat to roam the Arctic waters. With our new vessel you can join an exciting and more environmentally friendly boat trip to the exciting Russian settlement of Barentsburg.
The boat MS Bard has the greenest technology available on the market. This is in line with the other developments in Hurtigruten when they launches MS Roald Amundsen, the world's first hybrid-driven cruise ship in 2019, and rebuild their existing cruise ships to run on large battery packs, natural- and biogas - made from organic waste. Svalbard is known for its Arctic silence, and with the silent electric catamaran you will experience this in the best possible way. The boat is emission-free when it goes on electricity, and we are very proud to be able to introduce this type of transport in the Arctic waters.
Barentsburg is with its 450 inhabitants Svalbard's second largest settlement. The mining community is located on the beautiful Grønfjord, and is operated and owned by the state-owned Russian mining company Trust Arcticugol. There are own coal-fired power stations, hospitals, hotels, schools, kindergartens and cultural and sports buildings. Although there is still mining in the city, tourism is building up to become the most important industry. It is fascinating to visit Barentsburg and it is an experience to combine untouched nature with Russian culture.
The conditions in Svalbard change a lot throughout the year, and a trip to Barentsburg during the midnight sun in May will be different than when the polar night approaches in October. Whatever the season, you can expect unique experiences in beautiful Svalbard nature.
The boat is equipped with modern design and innovative technological solutions such as underwater microphones and underwater drones, creating a unique platform for exploring the sea, nature and wildlife beneath, as well as over water.
MS Bard is one of the first sightseeing boats in the world to run full-day power tours, specially designed for its purpose. When the boat goes over 10 knots on the transport stages to Barentsburg and Pyramiden, a hybrid solution with brand new, fuel-saving technology enters. When the boat approaches glaciers, wildlife or settlements, it will sound silently at 100% power.
Don’t miss out on our great offers and news from Svalbard.
