This year it is 125 years since the tourism adventure on Svalbard began - when Hurtigruten's founder Richard With established the world's northernmost hotel on what still is known as Hotellneset. At the same time, he started expedition cruising to Svalbard. He laid the foundation, not only for what today is known as Hurtigruten Expeditions, but essentially for modern expedition cruising. MS Fridtjof Nansen is the latest addition to Hurtigruten Expeditions' fleet of hybrid-powered ships. On September 14, it will get Longyearbyen as its port of registry. We will mark this occasion with a grandiose naming ceremony - and you are invited!

Festive ceremony, activities and offers - the entire week

To mark the event, several happenings will take place throughout the week at our restaurants and shops in Longyearbyen. On September 14, MS Fridtjof Nansen will arrive at the city quay for the naming ceremony. In addition to speeches, entertainment and food, you will also have the chance to win an expedition cruise. In other words, this is a celebration you do not want to miss out on!

  • 17:00 Naming Ceremony at the Quay
    The doors will open at 16:00, and at 17:00 we commence the ceremony. Instead of breaking the traditional champagne bottle, a chunk of ice will be crushed over the hull of MS Fridtjof Nansen. Further, the celebration will include entertainment, speeches, and throughout the event there will be free serving of drinks and good food straight from the grill.

Please note: Due to restrictions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, we have a maximum limit of 400 guests. For the same reason, it will not be possible to board MS Fridtjof Nansen. Are you curious about what it looks like on board? Take a virtual tour of the ship here.

  • Afterparty at Longyear78 Outdoor & Expeditions
    After the ceremony on the quay, Longyear78 invites you to a shopping evening with extended opening hours until 21:00. Here you will find good offers and some sweet snacks. For more information, see the Facebook event.

Win an expedition cruise!

To ensure a safe event for all guests, you must register upon arrival at the quay. At the registration, you will receive a lottery ticket to have the chance of winning an expedition cruise with Hurtigruten Expeditions for two persons! The cruise will take place around Iceland with MS Fridtjof Nansen, in the summer of 2022. The winner will be announced at the end of the event.

Terms and conditions

The competition starts and ends on 14 September 2021. Everyone who receives a lottery ticket at the event on the quay will automatically join the competition to win an expedition cruise for two people with MS Fridtjof Nansen. The winner can choose one of the following departures:

The prize includes a stay in an unspecified cabin for 2 people. The prize includes food, drinks and activities on board in accordance with Hurtigruten Expedition's standard onboard offer. It does not include optional activities, food or drinks beyond this. Flights to/from the points of departure/arrival are not included.

The winner will be selected randomly and announced at the end of the event. To win the prize, you must be present at the announcement. The winner will then be followed up by our team. It is not possible to exchange the prize for a voucher, have the trip converted into cash or change the date/destination/ship. The terms of the "Book With Confidence" campaign do not apply. The travelers must meet Hurtigruten's infection control measures and the travel destination's rules for infection control. In addition, Hurtigruten's general terms and conditions apply.

Infection control

  • We follow Norway's national guidelines and advice on infection control
  • At the event, there will be 2 cohorts à 200 people
  • All guests will be registered at the entrance. The information can be used for infection tracking.
  • Antibac stations are located at the entrance, exit and at the food stand
  • We keep at least one meter distance
  • Stay at home if you feel sick
